Introduction
When you read any textbook on advanced differential equations, you
will find the authors have a high opinion of themselves. The
authors look at differential equations and then at the solutions of
these equations, and they say "You don't want to go any farther
than you have to". The authors say "It is much easier to solve these
difference equations than it is to solve ordinary differential
equations", and then the authors solve the problems with their usual
methodology.
However, a careful reader will note that when the authors
discuss the solutions, their methods never seem to work, and the
authors can never explain why they failed. In other words, in order
for the solutions to be correct, the authors must assume that the
solution is correct. This means that the authors cannot explain the
solutions.
Unfortunately, we have no choice but to accept the solutions that
the authors hand us. The issue here is that there are often errors
in the work of the authors. For example, the authors might solve
the problem by substituting numbers for the unknown variables, but
they may not realize that the results will not be correct unless
the unknown is never exactly zero. The authors may not realize
that their calculations are incorrect because they are just
working with approximations. The authors may take a more abstract
view of differential equations, thinking that a solution is just a
"general" solution. The authors may never notice that the general
solutions really are solutions of the differential equation.
Some of the things that the authors fail to notice are easy to
see. For example, in one chapter of Advanced Differential Equations,
a differential equation is given. The differential equation has
several solutions, and the authors tell us that they can prove the
existence of this solution. It is easy to see that the solutions
are not correct. As another example, in the author's book
Differential Equations with Applications, the authors explain
how to obtain solutions to problems, but the authors never explain
why the problem will not have a solution.
It is much more difficult to find problems that are
inherently wrong. The proofs of these problems often do not
appear until the very end of the chapter,
